Mars Rover

Project Type

Space Robotics

Date

March 2023

As the captain and co-founder of Team Kosmos, I led the development of our Mars rover, emphasizing not only leadership but also effective interdisciplinary communication to achieve our ambitious goals. I spearheaded a 30-member team of engineers, scientists, and software developers, ensuring seamless collaboration across disciplines to bring together various aspects of the rover’s design. This involved facilitating clear communication between mechanical engineers, AI specialists, and control system designers to ensure each component worked harmoniously.

A significant highlight of our project was the implementation of fuzzy logic control, which I helped oversee and integrate into the rover’s systems. This advanced control method allowed the rover to handle the uncertainty and variability of the Martian environment, especially while navigating through rugged terrain and underground cave systems. Working closely with the control systems team, I ensured that the fuzzy logic approach was effectively implemented to optimize the rover’s decision-making in real time, particularly in navigating unknown terrains without external support.

Under my leadership, we prioritized interdisciplinary collaboration, ensuring that the mechanical, software, and power systems worked in concert. This was crucial for the rover's AI-based navigation system, which used stereo cameras, LIDAR, and the Jetson Nano processor to autonomously map and navigate the Martian landscape. I facilitated open discussions between the hardware and software teams to ensure that the fuzzy logic control interacted smoothly with the rover’s sensors, robotic arm, and propulsion systems.

Through strategic decision-making and an emphasis on cross-functional communication, I helped Team Kosmos develop a cutting-edge, cost-effective Mars rover. This project not only showcased my leadership but also highlighted my ability to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, ensuring the successful integration of complex systems, including fuzzy logic control, to advance Mars exploration.
